Arsenal Look to Nikola Zigic as a Remedy for Their Forward Woes
Arsenal are allegedly set to make a
shock move for free agent Nikola Zigic after an injury to Olivier Giroud
has left the Gunners short on forwards.
6ft 8ins Zigic signed for Birmingham for £6m in 2010, though the striker's best days are behind him as he turns 34 in less than a month.
Nevertheless, the Serbian's agent Milan Calasan has stated that the Gunners have offered the player a short-term deal with the option to extend until next season.
"Wenger called me in the afternoon on Tuesday and stressed the desire to engage Nikola Zigic," Calasan said to SPORT.
"He was offered a contract to the end of the year, with an option to extend until the end of 2015. We will see what happens, but everything Nikola has to decide."
Zigic was released by Championship outfit Birmingham at the end of last season and for a club like Arsenal to come in for the forward is a huge surprise.
Nonetheless, Wenger's forward woes seem to have driven him into making such a move as Yaya Sanogo struggles with a hamstring injury, whilst Lukas Podolski and Joel Campbell are still returning to full fitness after the World Cup.
If Zigic is to find himself in an Arsenal shirt, then fans may rightly question the decision to sign such a player when their club should be looking to build on last campaign's FA Cup success.
