Owen Hargreaves: Manchester United Shouldn't Sign Mats Hummels Because He's Too Slow
Owen
Hargreaves doesn't believe that Manchester United should be looking to
sign Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund this summer and should
concentrate their efforts on going after someone in the mould
of ex-captain Nemanja Vidic instead.
Appearing on BT Sport's
transfer deadline day coverage, the former United midfielder said of
Hummels, "He's a super, super ball-playing centre-back but I don't think
he can defend, he's too slow."
The Old Trafford club have been linked with a move for the German
World Cup winner for several months, with many fans and pundits seeing
him as the solution to all of Louis van Gaal's problems. However, Hargreaves, who was a Champions League winner with United in 2008, doesn't think things are quite so clear cut.
"I think Hummels is a nice
football player, he's easy on the eye. He's Franz Beckenbauer, the new
version, a super passer but United need somebody physical, a presence. I
think that if I'm Manchester United I want Nemanja Vidic, I want
Vincent Kompany.
"He's the captain of Borussia Dortmund, they're last in the Bundesliga. Is that the measuring stick for Manchester United? I'm not so sure."
