The world No.3 has suffered disc problems for the past two years and was forced out of this year’s French Open after it flared up again.
He returned to action to win Wimbledon in stunning style in July, but has struggled through the hard court season and recently lost to Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets in the US Open quarter-final.
Murray has now decided to have an operation to deal with the injury, having felt the effects again during last weekend’s superb Davis Cup win over Croatia.

The British star, 26, will miss the rest of the regular tour season as well as the World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena in London in November.
But he hopes to be fit to make his usual trip to Miami for warm weather pre-season training ahead of the 2014 campaign.
Murray will then be targeting the Australian Open in January followed by Great Britain’s Davis Cup clash against the USA.
