PSG to Make Chelsea's David Luiz World's Most Expensive Defender
Paris Saint-Germain will make Chelsea's
David Luiz the world's most expensive defender with a deal worth around
£50m set to be finalised within the next 48 hours, according to the Mail.
The two clubs are yet to agree the exact terms of the 27-year-old's transfer, though it's believed the deal will surpass the two previous world-record fees, both set by PSG - for centre-half pair Marquinhos and Thiago Silva.
The Qatari-backed side have been hit with a £49m fine for breaching Fifa's Financial Fair Play regulations, but their owner remains bullish over his transfer plans and will move quick for Luiz in order to ward off interest from European heavyweights, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
Once a fee has been agreed with the Blues, the French champions will seek permission from former Stamford Bridge boss Luiz Felipe Scolari to carry out a medical at Brazil's World Cup base, in order to tie up a deal before the start of the tournament.
Both Bayern and Barca are said to have been blown out of the water by the Parisians' offer, which dwarfs the highest fee received by an English club for a defender, when Manchester United paid Leeds £30m for Rio Ferdinand in 2002.
Luiz has started just 15 league games for the Blues this season and may have found his chances further limited next term, with skipper John Terry agreeing an extension and French prospect Kurt Zouma incoming.
Chelsea will use the money from Luiz's sale to press on with targets of their own, starting with Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa.
