Andy Murray claimed life was “very, very unfair” after learning his fellow Scot Elena Baltacha had been diagnosed with liver cancer.
Baltacha revealed last week she was battling the disease and Murray says he will do anything he can to help her plight.
"I
heard about it from my mum a couple of weeks ago - she’d gone in to see
her in the hospital,” he said. “You’re obviously shocked to hear that.
"I’ve
known Bally for a long time. She’s so young, she’s just retired, you’re
expecting her to enjoy just a nice happy life. She’s just got married
as well so you feel bad. Life is very, very unfair.
"If there’s
anything I could do - I’m sure any of the guys on the tour and the
girls, if there’s anything we could do that could help, we would.
"I’m
sure this year, if we do the Rally Against Cancer at Queen’s, that’s
something that would definitely be great to get Elena involved in at an
early stage."
Murray is through to round four of the BNP Paribas
Open at Indian Wells in California, edging past young Czech foe Jiri
Vesely (6-7 6-4 6-4) after dropping the first set and trailing in sets
two and three.
British No.3 James Ward lost 3-6 6-2 6-4 to Feliciano Lopez. The World No.160 had 10 break points but only converted one.
New coach for Robson
Return: Laura Robson at the Australian Open
Laura Robson has hired the coach who led Maria Sharapova to Wimbledon glory.
The British No.1
has been out of action since the Australian Open with a wrist injury,
though she could return at next week’s Sony Open in Miami.
And the 20-year-old will now work with Colombian Mauricio Hadad for 27 weeks this year as she seeks a long-term coach.
Robson has had four coaches in the last three years, including Andy Murray’s former coach Miles MacLagan.
Hadad, 42, worked with Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2004 and spent two years with Heather Watson.
