The Spurs boss took a risk by slamming them in public on the eve of this Europa League last 16 tie - but it was a gamble that ended up backfiring spectacularly.
Tottenham were second best all over the pitch to a deadly Benfica side who were two goals up and cruising within an hour after clinical strikes by Rodrigo and Luisao.
Christian Eriksen briefly gave them hope by firing a curling free kick into the top corner with 26 minutes to play. But up until that point they had been utterly outplayed.
This was a little taste of Champions League football for Spurs because Benfica have just dropped out of that competition.
But the gulf in class looked huge - and was only underlined when Luisao struck again with six minutes to go to leave Spurs needing a miracle in the second leg.
Tottenham went into the game with some stinging criticism from their manager still ringing loudly in their ears.
Sherwood accused his side of lacking guts and character after their 4-0 humbling by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. But this was not the reaction he was looking for.
The players too held a post-match inquest after that game which turned into a furious slanging match.
But the only passion shown by anyone here was on the touchline as Sherwood and barmy Benfica boss Jorge Jesus exchanged angry words several times.
