Manchester United 0-3 Liverpool: Two Gerrard Penalties Seal Woeful Defeat for United
Liverpool completely took apart Manchester United at Old Trafford to win 3-0 and continue their push for the Premier League title.
Two penalties from Steven Gerrard and one goal from Luis Suarez did the damage against David Moyes' team.
Manchester United were lethargic and lacked invention to rattle Simon Mignolet in goal for Liverpool.
While Brendan Rodgers' team were compact and stuck to their game plan as
they sought to find an opening. And it did happen when Daniel Sturridge
floated in a pass to Suarez in the box,the Uruguayan with a piece of
trickery looped the ball past Rafael Da Silva but the Brazilian stopped
the ball with his arm and conceded a penalty.
Rafael was lucky to have stayed on in the game after initially fouling Gerrard and getting booked for it.
Gerrard stepped up and placed the ball beyond David De Gea to open the scores for Liverpool.
The best United came to finding the net in the first half was when
Mignolet punched out Rooney's shot from the edge of the box after being
fed by Rafael.
Another clumsy challenge in the box immediately after the commencement
of the second half by Phil Jones, saw Liverpool go two goals up.
Gerrard expertly converted and made it two goals, making him the all time leading scorer for Liverpool against Manchester United.
United improved though but there was no penetration and they couldn't
produce one of their famous comebacks under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Then the game further turned on its head after United's captain Nemanja
Vidic was sent for a second bookable offence on Daniel
Sturridge, although replays showed that the English striker clearly dived
to win the penalty.
The red card was Vidic's fourth against Liverpool, the highest by one player against any club in the Premier League era.
However,Gerrard missed the penalty and was denied a chance for a hat-trick seeing his kick bounce off the post.
Liverpool almost found the net instantaneously when David De Gea made a
point blank save from Suarez, blocking his shot from finding the net in a
one on one situation.
But there was no denying Suarez the second time when Sturridge's shot
found him and he controlled the ball with his right before beating De
Gea with his left foot.
The loss sees United now fourteen points off Liverpool and seems to have now lost any realistic chance of making the top four.
It would be more misery for Moyes if United fails to overturn the 2-0 deficit against Olympiacos in the UEFA Champions League
