An error from Simon Mignolet gifted Manchester City all three points at the Etihad Stadium as Manuel Pellegrini's side came from behind to beat Liverpool and maintain their 100% home record.

Philippe Coutinho had given Liverpool the lead midway through the first half, but Vincent Kompany soon headed his side level, before Alvaro Negredo's goalbound effort was fumbled into his own net by Mignolet on the stroke of half-time.

Manchester City started the first half brightly and could have found themselves ahead inside the opening five minutes, as Jesus Navas hit the post with a looping header after being picked out at the far post by Aleksandar Kolarov.

Despite Pellegrini's side having the better of the opening 15 minutes, Liverpool soon began to find their feet in the game and should have taken the lead through Raheem Sterling. Having been played in by Luis Suarez, the England international rounded Joe Hart before rolling the ball into the back of the net. However, his effort was wrongly disallowed for offside.

Liverpool did not have long to wait before they took the lead however, with Suarez and Sterling again both involved. Receiving the ball on the edge of the area, the Uruguayan played in the 19-year-old who once again beat the offside trap before rounding Hart, only to lose his footing, allowing the aware Countinho to steal in and tap the ball home into the empty net.

However, it took City just five minutes to level the scores, as Kompany rose highest at the near post to divert David Silva's corner past Mignolet for his second goal in two games.

Hart had to be at his inspirational best to deny Liverpool a second on the 40-minute mark, diving low to keep out Coutinho's effort after good build-up play between Sterling and Suarez.

Liverpool were soon made to rue the miss, when Negredo ran onto Jesus Navas' through ball before firing a strike at goal straight at Mignolet for what should have been a routine catch, but, despite getting a glove to it, the Belgian was unable to keep the ball out.

Liverpool pushed desperately for an equaliser in the second half, as Glen Johnson missed a glorious opportunity to level the scores when ball ricocheted into his path with the goal gaping. However, instead of firing the ball home first time, a poor first touch from the 29-year-old saw the ball roll harmlessly out of play.

Sterling missed from a similar position 15 minutes from the end when he was picked out by Suarez inside the six-yard box, but a lack of composure cost the winger as he skied the ball over the crossbar, much to the relief of Hart.

Brendan Rodgers introduced Iago Aspas and Victor Moses to the action late on in a desperate bid to steal a share of the points, but despite Suarez having a strong shout for a penalty turned down in the last minute, City held on to leapfrog Liverpool into second place.
