Lionel Messi of FC Barcelona, Franck Ribéry of Bayern Munich and Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid were confirmed by FIFA as the three finalists for the Ballon d’Or award.

Now the question that everyone will be thinking is: who deserves to win the Ballon d'Or?

3. Lionel Messi

Six injuries in 2013.

That sort of sums up why Lionel Messi should be last of the three.

His injuries have hampered him from being in the form that he's had the last couple of seasons.

Nothing should be taken away from Messi, though, as despite all those injuries he has been fantastic for FC Barcelona.

Culés and football fans around the world will hope to see Lionel Messi stronger than ever, but this year he will not win the coveted Ballon d'Or.

2. Franck Ribery

Franck Ribery is an excellent player and part of the successful FC Bayern Munich treble winners.
Is Ribery a standout player from all those
players?
No.
Franck Ribery is currently their best player. Should a player who's part of a well-oiled machine be considered the best player in the world if he's just part of that well oiled machine?
No.
This is where Franck Ribery falls short of winning the award and earns himself a respectable second place in the Ballon d'Or finalists.

In the end this is an individual award. Sure, he won a treble and his contributions were, without a doubt, noteworthy but there was one player who was just above the rest.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo was a cut above the rest.

With 67 goals in 57 appearances it's hard not to argue for Cristiano Ronaldo's case. He's been excellent for both Real Madrid and Portugal.

Many would argue that Cristiano Ronaldo would have been in the shadows of Lionel Messi had he been injury free but that's besides the point, to be honest.

People have to accept that this year Cristiano Ronaldo has been the better player and you can't say much more than that.

If Lionel Messi manages to win this year it would be an absolute scandal.

Sure, Cristiano Ronaldo only won the Spanish Supercup. However, this is a individual award, prized for the best player in the world and not for who won the most titles.

So who will win?

This is Cristiano Ronaldo's year and he should win his second Ballon d'Or.
