Manchester United are in no rush to open talks with Wayne Rooney about a new contract - despite Chelsea’s renewed interest in him.
Rooney has just 18 months left on his current deal and - as we revealed on Wednesday - Jose Mourinho's Londoners are poised to make a fresh bid for him in the summer.
But United officials are relaxed about the striker’s contractual situation and will not be rushed into talks with his representatives.
Crucially, the champions believe Rooney is now happy at the club and has no desire to leave, despite questioning his Old Trafford future last summer.
The breakdown of the player's relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson saw Rooney become disillusioned with life at United and consider a move after nine years.
But the 28-year-old has been given a new lease of life under Ferguson’s successor David Moyes and has been the Reds' stand-out performer this season.
Rooney has 10 goals in 19 games, as well as a 10 assists, having rediscovered his best form following an indifferent spell last season.
