Luis Suarez claimed the Player of the Year at Monday night's Football Supporters' Federation Awards.

Suarez beat the likes of Leighton Baines, Christian Benteke, Juan Mata, Robin van Persie and Pablo Zabaleta to the prize, which more than 500,000 people voted for.

The Uruguyan spoke of his happiness at Anfield and his confidence that Liverpool can succeed this season.

The Liverpool striker, who attended the event at the Emirates, said: 'I think it is fair to say the past year has been an eventful one for me.

'This award is not just for me but for my team-mates, management and coaching staff and everyone connected with Liverpool.'

'It's so special because everyone knows my last year has not been really good, with my problems. But after that I forgot everything and tried my best on the pitch.

'It's more important if we stay together and we keep going, this is more important and you forget the problems and that's why I stay with the club for this season.'

Suarez also spoke about the moment Uruguay drew England in the World Cup group stages: 'Before the draw I hoped for no England in the World Cup and when the ball say England it's unbelievable for me and I send message to Steve [Gerrard] and he send message to me and we laugh because it's funny and unbelievable.

"Now we concentrate on Liverpool and maybe when we finish we speak a little more.

'I think it's a difficult World Cup group and Costa Rica also. Maybe not the level of Uruguay, Italy and England but they have very good players. If you want to win the World Cup then every game you concentrate and you want to win every game for all the country.'
