Crunch time: Lotus will finally debut their car - and Hamilton and Button will be interested viewers
Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button will be keeping their fingers crossed all does not go well at a crucial Lotus test in Spain today.
The Enstone operation are the last team on the grid to debut their new Grand Prix challenger, the E22.
As it hits the tracks for the first time in Jerez the focus will not so much be on the controversial twin tusk design and its chassis but the performance of champions Renault’s troubled new V6 turbo engine.
The French power plant had a nightmare opening test in Jerez last week.
Champion Sebastian Vettel’s team completed just 21 laps in four disastrous days.
That was less than a tenth of the running of their Mercedes rivals.
And the V6 power plant was largely to blame, although Adrian Newey’s ambitious packaging contributed to overheating problems.
And so today’s Jerez test will be the first real marker of how Renault have bounced back since that embarrassing debut that has pushed Red Bull to the brink of crisis.
New signing Pastor Maldonado has been at the wheel and getting his first experience of the E22.
Critical as it surely is for Renault and Lotus, because it is a filming day doubling as a shakedown test, the team are restricted to just 100 kilometres on old rubber.
Lotus missed the first test attended by all the other teams last week in Spain because their car was not ready
