Most soccer rivalries are usually between two teams based in the same city to see which group of fans will have the bragging rights to claim that their team is the best. There are however a few exceptions to that rule that we will mention as we will go along rivalries that have more to do with success rather than location.

16. Liverpool and Manchester United

These two teams have disliked each other ever since the clubs were first born over 100 years ago with a dislike between the two Cities stemming from the Industrial revolution when Manchester was the powerhouse of British manufacturing and Liverpool was the country’s principal port from which all the goods manufactured in Manchester were sent to the rest of the world. That was until the Manchester Ship canal opened in 1894 allowing ships to bypass Liverpool that resulted in great losses to the merchants of the port city.
The two soccer teams of the Northwest became over the years the most successful in English history and when the two clubs meet today for a regular Premier League match they generate a worldwide television audience of nearly a billion people which to put the popularity of this match up into perspective is nine times the number of people who tune in to watch the NFL Superbowl.
