Manchester United 2-2 Fulham: Bent's Stoppage Time Equaliser Stuns Moyes' Men
Substitute
Darren Bent equalised in stoppage time to stun Manchester United at Old
Trafford and rescue a point for the bottom club and leave United in
disarray.
For most of the game it seemed Fulham would
pull off a shock as they took a surprise lead after 19 minutes when
Lewis Holtby clipped a delightful ball over the top of the United
defence to find an unmarked Steve Sidwell, who poked the ball past a
stranded David De Gea.
Just two minutes after Robin Van
Persie had a chance to equalise, but he blazed it over from Rafael's
cross. United were dominating possession, but were almost punished near
the end of the half as Fulham cleared a corner to Muamer Tankovic who
carried the ball 50 yards before playing in Keiran Richardson, but he
skyed the ball over De Gea's goal.
The second half
continued in the same manner, but United had their best chance as
Patrice Evra crossed to Juan Mata whose initial shot was blocked. He
then laid the ball off to Wayne Rooney who fired at goal, forcing a
brilliant save out of Maarten Stekelenburg.
Fulham were
dogged and determined but United finally found the breakthrough in the
78th minute as Evra again crossed to Mata and again he saw his shot
blocked. However, on the second attempt he scuffed the ball across goal
and there was Van Persie to tap in.

From there on it seemed United had the game as Fulham had showed little attacking intent, but in the fourth minute of stoppage time there was one last sting in the tail. Sidwell won the ball midway inside United's half and played in Richardson who powered a shot at De Gea who parried it up in the air. The ball came down to Darren Bent who headed it into an empty net from six yards out to stun Old Trafford and grab a crucial point for the Cottagers.
United stay seventh in the table and are now nine points adrift of Liverpool in fourth. Fulham stay bottom, but the draw ends a run of four straight defeats and leaves them just four points adrift of Sunderland in 17th.
