Arsenal 0 - 2 Chelsea: Chelsea Fringe Players Step Up To Beat Gunners
The tie of the round saw José Mourinho and his Chelsea side travel to the Emirates Stadium and play high flying Arsenal in the Capital One Cup. Both teams fielded a mixture of starting 11 and back up players, but the Portuguese manager will be the most pleased with the performance from his side.
The game started with on open flow as there was plenty of space for the variety of technical players from both sides to use. Lots of exchanging of possession meant that few chances were created in the opening 20 minutes.
That all changed when deja vu of Chelsea's winner against Manchester City at the weekend happened for the Blues opening goal. A few passes in the middle of the park saw the ball ricochet high into the air heading back towards Arsenal's box. After it bounced, Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson attempted to head the ball back to Łukasz Fabiański.
César Azpilicueta had chased the ball 85-yards up the pitch and between Jenkinson not heading it hard enough and Fabiański not being far enough out to pick it up, the Spanish defender stole the ball and squeezed it past the on rushing goalkeeper to put his side one up.
Arsenal reacted positively with Wilshere looking lively throughout the first half. Nacho Monreal had a shot from the left fizz just past the far post on the half hour mark. Apart from that, Arsenal made few attempts in the opening 45 minutes.
Chelsea, on the other hand, almost created a few decent shooting opportunities, but Samuel Eto'o and Michael Essien both managed to slice their shots so much they went off for a throw-in.
The second half started with both sides exchanging shots. Eto'o had a shot from distance miss by very little, with Santi Cazorla doing the same up the other end. Arsenal fans will be hugely disappointed with the performance of Nicklas Bendtner, who never appeared to be on the same wave length as his team mates. Bendtner was most at fault when he was found in the middle of the box with some space and instead of shooting, he passed it back away from the box.
Brazilian winger and Chelsea new boy Willian had a good game throughout. He demonstrated an extremely good work ethic in defence and attacked with pace and purpose. However, Ramsey wasn't to be left out of the action and almost got the eqauliser from distance.
Minutes after Arsène Wenger had sent on Mesut Özil to get back on level terms, Spanish midfielder Juan Mata scored a thunderbolt after Willian knocked it down to him on the edge of the box to make it 2-0.
Giroud was substituted on in an attempt to spark a comeback and within seconds forced a save from Mark Schwarzer. However, it was Chelsea who had the best chance to add another goal to the game as Essian played Ramires into the box. The Brazilian burst to the byline and got the cross in only for Laurent Koscielny to unconventionally stop it going over the line.
A few shots from distance for either side peppered the final few minutes, but the score remained the same. Both managers will be pleased that some fringe players got a run out against a good opposition, but Chelsea's strength in depth saw them through on the evening.
