Roberto Martinez has admitted that Everton are yet to offer Leighton Baines a new contract despite Manchester United’s strong pursuit of him last summer.

The 28-year-old was subject to two rejected bids from David Moyes and it was believed that Everton were going to tie him down to a new deal in order to fend off any more interested from Moyes but they are yet to do so despite his fine form this season.

“There is no train of thought on that at the moment,” Martinez told talkSPORT.

“At the moment all that matters is to see Leighton fully fit and enjoying his football. All his performance stats have improved from last season and that is important to me.

“That is what matters, everything else is just trying to find an issue from the outside to see what we can comment on.”

It is in Everton’s best interest to tie Baines down to a new contract as soon as possible if they want to keep him but from a United perspective, is he the right player to sign?

Patrice Evra has revealed he is likely to leave at the end of the season for personal reasons andFabio is looking at moving away to secure more game time, so United are certainly in the market for a left back but given his age, Baines may not be the right choice.

He will be 29 soon and will cost between £15-20 million given that he is the best left-back in the Premier Leaague, so he would have little to no resale value and United would be back in the market for a left-back again in a few years.

Baines would certainly strengthen our team, but a more long term solution would be Southampton’s Luke Shaw who at just 18 could become United’s left-back for the next decade.

Moyes has already looked at other left-backs given his deadline day pursuit of Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao and although he was very keen to sign Baines in the summer, he may be forced to look elsewhere if he wants a player who will become our left back for more than just a few years.
