The former Manchester United striker did the double over Sir Alex Ferguson in the 2005-06 season as Blackburn boss and the Welshman admitted he "enjoyed every minute of it."
Absence While United's home was a fortress under Sir Alex Ferguson, they have struggled this season in the league under David Moyes, claiming just five points out of a possible 12.
Hughes said earlier in the week that he believed United had lost their fear factor.
And he feels that is down to the absence of Ferguson.
“You sense that the Premier League is so strong now that teams from top to bottom back their abilities to have a go”
Mark Hughes
Hughes said: "Even when I was playing for Manchester United, you thought you had teams beaten in the tunnel. That is what Old Trafford can do to teams and players.
"You sense that the Premier League is so strong now that teams from top to bottom back their abilities to have a go, maybe more so this season than before.
"Sir Alex was part of that. He has driven the club for the last 25 years and the determination of the group of players he had at any given time.
"I remember him saying that Brad Friedel made 10 world class saves in our 2-1 win at Old Trafford - he was wrong in that regard because it was only eight!
"I enjoyed being a United player but when I beat him as a manager, which didn't happen very often, I enjoyed every minute of that, too.
"You have got to have everything going right for you but you need to have the attitude that you are going to get something out of the game."
