Is it Possible to Keep Calm and Support Watford FC?
Let us not forget that Zola's men provided Sky Sports with one of the most memorable matches of all time last season - Watford vs. Leicester in the second leg of the play-offs. 'Do not scratch your eyes' was the phrase coined by the Sky Sports commentator that day and to a large extent it defines Watford's mode of play. In the final minute of injury time, Leicester's Anthony Knockaert missed a penalty, forcing Almunia to make a smart double save. Moments later, Watford scored on the counter attack through Troy Deeney in tremendous fashion, securing Watford a place at Wembley.
This season, the Hornets are already one of the top scoring teams in the Championship, scoring 24 goals in 12 games. Watford's best performances to date include a 6-1 win at home to Bournemouth and a 5-1 victory against Barnsley at Oakwell.
In addition, it is already clear that Watford have more depth to their squad than last season. It can even be argued that Matej Vydra has not been missed, with the likes of Troy Deeney, Fernando Forestieri and Diego Fabbrini all regularly scoring goals for the club. Deeney, who currently has six goals to his name features in the top 10 Championship goal scorers. Lewis McGugan (signed from Nottingham Forest in the summer) has also strengthened the squad, scoring five goals himself. Most notably, he equalised in the match at Vicarage Road against his former club.
This depth to the squad was evident during the Capital One Cup match at home to Norwich City on 24th September. Watford certainly did not put out a full strength side, with many first team players such as Manuel Almunia not featuring at all in the squad. The Hornets played remarkably well that evening, demonstrating their ability to play 'sexy football', which the fans love to chant. However, this proved to be another frustrating and edgy night for a Watford fan! After gaining a two goal lead, Watford conceded two late goals, with the match finishing 2-2 at the end of normal time. Just as it seemed the home side were nearing the win, Norwich equalised in the 95th minute of the game, with seconds remaining. The additional half an hour of play decide the match ended in a victory for Norwich - 3-2 to the Canaries.
Watford coped with the Norwich pressure well and for a large proportion of the match were on top. In spite of this, some people might argue that Norwich did not put out a full strength side themselves. However, a few big names such as Steven Whittaker and Johan Elmander did feature. Gary Hooper who had signed for £5m from Celtic in the summer also played, scoring two of Norwich's three goals. Despite the defeat, the majority of Hornets fans were happy with the way their team had played and taking everything into account, Watford were certainly unlucky.
It is evident, however, that the Watford defence certainly needs work, as the team are rarely able to keep a clean sheet. They have only successfully managed to do so in two out of the 12 league matches they have played so far this season. Most recently, Watford beat Wigan at home 1-0, which may well prove to be a vital result. Despite this victory, it can be said that Watford did not make it look easy. In the first half they were lucky not to go behind as Wigan had a goal disallowed after a controversial offside decision. In addition, Owen Coyle's men were unlucky not to be given a penalty after Lloyd Doyley tangled with Nick Powell in the box. Thankfully, Cristian Battocchio scored eight minutes from time, leading the Golden Boys to a much needed win. Even after the goal, in true Watford style, Hornets supporters were left biting their fingernails. Zola's men have a bad habit of giving their opponent too much of the ball once they have taken the lead. This was evident again at Vicarage Road that day. The last eight minutes of the match were nerve-racking to say the least!
Last weekend again saw the Hornets concede a late goal in their match against Derby. Conor Sammon scored in the 88th minute of the game and ultimately Watford lost 3-2. This could prove to be another crucial point lost when it comes to the fight for promotieon at the end of th season.
To conclude, supporting Watford FC is rarely dull. As a neutral, watching the Hornets play football generally proves to be a good watch and a great source of entertainment . On the other hand, as a devoted Watford supporter like myself, it can sometimes be frustrating and extremely tense. However, it has been that way for as long as I can remember and this is what makes supporting Watford FC so special. Therefore all in all, I wouldn't like to have it any other way.
