Fernando Torres of Chelsea celebrates scoring their second goal during the Barclays Premier League match between Chelsea and Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on October 27, 2013 in London, England

In a weekend where all the title challengers won their respective games, all eyes were on Chelsea and Manchester City, two teams who are widely regarded as favourites for the title.

With a match that promised excitement from the Premier League's two biggest spenders, the game delivered just that. With high energy, plenty of pace and a fiery determination from both sides, the abundance of talent on the pitch seemed to cancel each of the oppositions out. Yet a nightmare mistake from City defender Nastasic and goalkeeper Hart in the dying minutes awarded Torres with a much deserved opportunity at goal, and the revitalised striker tucked home the winner.

Chelsea were initially the side who started off the mark quickest with a chance falling to Cahill before the third minute. Yet from then on until the 25th minute, Pellegrini's side dominated possession at Stamford Bridge, consistently attacking and opening up space across the pitch. Lovely link up work between Silva and Aguero looked promising, but the pair just couldn't carve out a dangerous shot at goal.

With end to end play without many obvious chances for either side, a great cross from Ramires to Torres was scuppered as the striker, finding himself in a perfect position in front of goal, powered the ball over an almost open net. Yet first blood went to Chelsea when Torres had a chance to redeem himself just moments later in the 33rd minute by making, rather than scoring, the opening goal. The striker powered through City's defence, cleverly beating Clichy and finding a pass to Schurrle who had opened up space in front of the left side near post and easily slotted home from close range. Torres was not quite finished before half time though, as the striker's sheer determination, pace and creativity nearly found the net as he thundered a curling shot onto the top right corner of the bar. Torres continued to drive forward, showing a spirit of old, consistently and easily beating Clichy down the left hand side. Yet it remained 1-0 at half time, despite the majority of possession falling to City whilst all of the chances fell to Chelsea.

City came out after half time with a renewed spirit and determination, probably feeling a little disheartened to be losing after dominating possession and playing some nice football. Their commitment and desire to get an equaliser was rewarded in the first few minutes of the second half. City's star man Aguero found a lovely shot on goal, beating Cech at his near side post. Just like the first half, City controlled the game, claiming the higher proportion of possession, and although there was again not many chances on goal, it was the team from the North who looked like scoring.

As the two teams continued to cancel each other out, matching their opposition for talent, pace and desire, the second half saw both teams frustrated as they continually tried to find the goal that would put their team ahead. Competition soon turned into aggression when Garcia, who had been below par throughout the match, elbowed a breaking Torres in the face. Referee Howard did not see that the offence was deliberate, as replays saw Garcia was fully aware of his actions, and so luckily escaped being sent off and was instead awarded a yellow card.

The sheer pace and chaos of the second half caused both teams to make silly mistakes as neither side allowed the opposition much time on the ball. The rash and desperate challenges continued when both sides were on the attack, as a clash between Garcia, Fernandinho and Torres stopped the striker's attacking run, yet once again Howard was reluctant to dish out cards.

As both teams had moderate chances on goal, Chelsea with a dipping long-distance shot from Ramires, and an Aguero and Navas break two on two, neither could break through the opposition's sturdy defence. This all changed in the dying minutes though, when a Willian shot that seemed to be out of reach of the intended target Torres, fell in front of defender Nastasic who was not aware of goalkeeper Hart approaching from behind, and headed disastrously towards his own goal. Torres, who had not sopped working, running and creating all match, chased the ball dramatically, and beat city's trailing defender to slot home, claiming the winning goal in the most dramatic of fashions.

With a performance by Manchester City that would on any other day have at least warranted a draw, a heartbreaking mistake from a lack of communication meant that perhaps the best team in the Premier League came away from Stamford Bridge with nothing, a result that may perhaps decide the title in Chelsea's favour given that they arguably have the second best team in the league.
