Horse Racing: AP McCoy rides his 4000th winner and cements his legacy
TONY McCOY was the toast of Towcester when he won the 4,000th race of his career on Mountain Tunes.
"It's very special to do it for lots of reasons. Obviously my wife is here with my children, Eve and Archie," said McCoy.
"JP and Jonjo are here and it means a lot for me to ride my 4,000th winner for them.
"My agent Dave Roberts is here. His dad passed away yesterday. He
said to me this morning his dad would want him to be here so as much as
anything I feel good to make him happy. That his dad is looking down on
me is very special."
The win was a typical McCoy ride.
Mountain
Tunes seemed to be treading water once he turned into the straight in
fourth position but the champ would not admit defeat.
He kept his
mount going despite a mistake at the second last, moved in to second
place going to the last and overhauled the leader Kris Spin 50 yards
from home.
Target
After the congratulations had died down, McCoy said: "The next target
is hopefully to end the season as champion jockey - which it is at the
beginning of every season.
"If I'm still in one piece I'd like to
get to Martin (Pipe's) record of 4,182. That would be a special
achievement because he's a fantastic man and a great friend.
"We've
had a bit of banter about it, so hopefully at some point I will be able
to maybe get close to his record, if not beat it."
McCoy, 39, won
his first race over jumps at Gowran Park on April 20, 1994, riding
Riszard. His first British winner came later that year, on Chickabiddy
at Exeter on September 7. He was champion conditional rider in the
1994-95 season. The first of his 18 NH jockeys' titles followed 12
months later.
McCoy was awarded an MBE in 2003, an OBE in 2010, and is the only jockey to win the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year award.
