The Steelers are already seven points behind Elite League table-toppers Belfast after losing to them on their own ice.
But Goertzen, 29, insists the Yorkshire side can still live up to their pre-season billing as title favourites.
He said: “It’s not where we want to be in the locker room and for the fans, I’m sure it’s not where they want to see us. We have got to look forward. The effort is there. It’s a long-term goal and we’ve still got a lot of work to do and need the fans behind us as much as they want us to win.”

Steelers boss Doug Christiansen was back behind the bench at the weekend after compassionate leave following his father’s sudden death.
He insists the title race is a long way from being over, saying: “This is like a golf tournament. Right now Belfast are hitting a lot of birdies, but it’s pretty hard to do that over the course of seven months!”
SWINDON have sacked Finnish forward Juha Silvander, 31, after scoring only three times in his first 15 games.
