Wicketkeeper Prior has been ruled out of the final warm-up game against New South Wales XI after tearing a calf muscle.
He is now facing a race against time to make the opening clash against Australia in Brisbane, starting on November 21.
Bell knows England would be hampered if Prior does not make it, with Jonny Bairstow poised to replace him behind the stumps.
Bell said: “Matt is vice-captain and an important bloke in the dressing room – not just for what he does on the pitch but how he speaks to the guys off it.
“If he is fit, he plays as he has been a massive part of our success and obviously we want him to recover in time.”
Bairstow will play as wicketkeeper against NSW in Sydney this week and Bell is pleased to see him feature after sitting on the sidelines so far during the tour.

“It’s great for Jonny to get his opportunity,” added Bell.
“You never know what happens on this tour – anyone could go down injured – but I believe and think if Matt is fit in Brisbane, then he plays.”
Meanwhile, Aussie captain Michael Clarke insists his side are better prepared for this Ashes showdown after their crisis-hit tour of England in the summer.
Coach Mickey Arthur was sacked before the series and star batsman David Warner was punished for punching Joe Root in a bar.
Clarke saw his side beaten 3-0 but last night said: “We are definitely a stronger unit now than then.
“There were a number of incidents on and off the field where this team could have broken down, fallen apart and lost the series 5-0.
‘‘But in the end everything that happened to the team at that time brought us closer.
“This team is in a fantastic place right now and the feeling in the group is outstanding.” England injury scare
