Five dead as Colombia celebrates World Cup 2014 qualification
Celebration turned to tragedy as the festive atmosphere turned sour when
fans marked their team's first qualification for the finals since 1998
At least five people have died in Bogota after Colombia fans celebrated the national side's qualification for the 2014 World Cup.
Los Cafeteros
produced an exceptional comeback to seal their progress to Brazil next
year, with a Carlos Carmona strike and two penalties from Radamel Falcao
seeing the hosts fight back from 3-0 down to secure a decisive draw
against Chile.
However, despite the fans' joy at appearing in a
World Cup for the first time in 16 years, scenes of celebration were
marred by reports of trouble.
According to official reports, at
least five people died in the capital Bogota, with three shot dead and
two dying in traffic accidents, and over two thousand fights were
recorded to have broken out nationwide.
Police also confirmed that in Bogota alone 106 motorists were detained after being caught in a drunken state.
"Nationally
there were over two thousand fights and police had to use all their
resources," confirmed police chief General Rodolfo Palomino.
Jose
Pekerman's side have sealed one of CONMEBOL's four automatic
qualification spots and sit second in the table with 27 points from
their 15 games, five behind top team and fellow qualifiers Argentina.
