THE NBA travelled to Europe this week culminating with the Oklahoma City Thunder playing the Philadelphia 76ers in a preseason game in Manchester on Tuesday evening. Tasked with convincing a sceptical British public of the merits of NBA basketball, here are the top 10 humorous comments made by players and coaches to the press ahead of the match.

Thabo Sefalosha, NBA, basketball, Manchester, Philadelphia 76ers, Oklahoma City Thunder,

The Thunder’s Swiss guard Thabo Sefalosha asked whether he prefers Manchester United or Manchester City: “I don’t want to have a problem with anyone, I like both teams. I’m really a big fan of the Premier League. I think maybe Manchester United.”

Asked which of the Philadelphia 76ers players fans in Manchester should look out for Thaddeus Young struggles before modestly settling on: “Ummm, me. Thaddeus Young.”

Young on the food in Spain: “Some places were good, some places weren’t. I know in Spain they like everything kind of raw and I wanted my stuff cooked.”

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie centre Steven Adams was also pretty focussed on food upon arriving in England (via Twitter): “Manchester is absolute class. #Bangers&Mash”

Oklahoma City Thunder coach Scott Brooks with an interesting, if slightly incomprehensible, view on what fans can expect from his team in Manchester: “When they leave the arena I expect them to leave in a prideful way about our team, that this team plays hard.”

New 76ers coach Brett Brown on babysitting 19-year-old Nerlens Noel: “The last thing we want to do is to take a young player that for the first time is earning significant money and leave him all by himself in the city of Philadelphia.”
Brett Brown giving the people of Philadelphia hope on when the 76ers can expect to win a title: “People don’t even have a clue on how hard it is to be the last man standing and I know that that’s 1000 years away maybe, but we want to put all the building blocks in place so that if we ever are in that position, the system is real.”
Derek Fisher on whether Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant share any of the same qualities: “What continues to separate Kevin from so many other young guys before him and probably those that will come after him, is that he’s a phenomenal person.”
Evan Turner on the ‘experts’ who have criticised his game: “A lot of so-called experts never played. You got people who grew up playing lacrosse trying to tell me how to play basketball."
Thaddeus Young may have missed the memo on the 76ers’ plans for this season: “We’re going to go out there and continue to play hard. We’re definitely not trying to tank. Or at least I don’t know that we’re trying to tank.”
