Now Sepp Blatter Wants to Do Away With World Cup Playoffs

FIFA President Sepp Blatter gives a press conference on October 4, 2013 at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich. Claims that migrant workers are treated like slaves in 2022 World Cup host Qatar were centre stage as the global football's governing body FIFA met behind closed doors

The two-legged home and away playoffs to qualify for the World Cup will be coming up on November 15th and 19th, but FIFA dictator Sepp Blatter, after all these years, has now decided that he doesn’t like the playoff system. Blatter wants to do away with the playoffs because he says it’s “too hard” on the losing teams. Well, losing and being disappointed is a part of sports and life, but Blatter’s not happy with it anymore.

He said he realises that there’s a lot of drama produced in the playoff system and it makes for great TV, but that’s it. "I think this is good for television, this is good for the spectacle of football but I think we should try to find a solution where at the end of the qualification, you are in or out, and not this playoff. This playoff...it gives more intensive action, but for those teams who are knocked out it is a hard way to go."

If he’s not happy with the system, then I wonder why FIFA introduced it in the first place, why Blatter’s suddenly against it and why hasn’t an alternative been introduced over the years? Perhaps he doesn’t like the playoffs anymore because France are in them against Ukraine this year. Who knows? But if a better qualifying system is created in the near future, then this might be the last time we see the World Cup playoff system used.
